Aicardi Syndrome is the absence or underdevelopment of tissue connecting the right and left sides of the brain. This causes seizures that commence in infancy, progressing to epilepsy that can be difficult to treat.
The symptoms of Aicardi Syndrome can include the following:
- Abnormally small eyes
- An unusually small head
- Hand deformities
- Developmental delays
- Eating difficulties
Aicardi Syndrome is rare and mostly affects females. Aicardi Syndrome usually begins with involuntary muscle spasms between 4 months and 4 years of age. It is likely caused by a new mutation in a gene located on the X chromosome.
Once diagnosed, Neuro Case Management can assist by providing Case Management Services including an Initial Needs Assessment to determine the client’s requirements when they have returned to the home environment. NCMUK can also employ carers to help to assist the family to meet the client’s needs ensuring their health and welfare is fully maintained at all times.
