Spina Bifida affects the spine and is usually apparent at birth. Spina Bifida is when a baby’s spine and spinal cord do not develop properly in the womb causing a gap in the spine. Although it is not definitively known what causes Spina Bifida it is thought to be a combination of the following risk factors:
- Genetic
- Nutritional
- Environmental
There are several different types of Spina Bifida which include:
- Myelomeningocele
- Meningocele
- Occulta
Therapies for those experiencing Spina Bifida can help and Neuro Case Management can help with this, carrying out an Initial Needs Assessment to determine what areas the Case Management Team need to focus on. This may include the organisation of additional Carers, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists etc.
NCMUK can also look into assistive devices, mobility equipment and other support that can be used around the home to aid in the Client’s safety and general wellbeing.
The NCMUK staff would be on hand to assist the Client and their family to establish a daily routine that would meet their needs.
